Course Description

Course Profile

Education program considers the interdisciplinary character and stresses particular profiling of the new specialists in knowledge of Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) perceived as a culturally and politically similar, and such preparation can facilitate obtaining employment. Studies will encompass cultures, geography, history, law, and economies of Scandinavian countries. This program will also include practical experiences and qualifications, which will enable a graduate to function in Scandinavian business environment as well as within the Polish governmental institutions engaged in cooperation with Scandinavian States and business entities.

A graduate of Scandinavian Studies will have a wide range of knowledge about Scandinavian Countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden), particularly about social economic, legal and political aspects of functioning in Scandinavian countries. This knowledge will allow a graduate to understand complex reality of complex reality of Scandinavian countries and the place of Scandinavia in worldwide economy. Educational program was conceived so a graduate can use earned skills at work and be able to analyze internal issues of Scandinavian countries in the international perspective. A graduate of Scandinavian Studies will acquire interdisciplinary knowledge in social science, specifically pertaining to Scandinavian history, conceptions, ideas and cooperation, integration of  Scandinavian states.  Knowledge of genesis, principles of functioning within the Scandinavian economic and social area will be acquired. Above this Scandinavian systems of security will be learned as well as economic and legal fundamentals of functioning of Scandinavian societies. Knowledge of one of Scandinavian languages at B2 level and also working knowledge of English will be a significant factor in getting a job, especially on international relations posts. 

Education Requirements

Candidates are admitted to Scandinavian Studies programme by the ranking. The position on the ranking list is determined by the number of points acquired by the candidate. Should the number of candidates not exceed the limit, all are admitted providing all the required documents are submitted and the conditions of competency in English fulfilled.

As a part of the admission process, it is necessary to demonstrate or provide evidence of English competence. The level of competence can be documented by one of the following certificates: Cambridge English First – FCE, IELT 5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 87-105 (or their equivalencies). Should the candidates not possess a certificate of English competence, they need to take an interview in English. At least sophomores and graduates of English philology and the foreign language teachers’ training colleges (with English specialty) will be admitted to Scandinavian Studies without the necessity of documenting their knowledge with a certificate. The following candidates are exempt from providing evidence of their English competence:

1. Candidates who graduated from high school with English as the language of instruction, or successfully passed the final high school exams in English;

2. Candidates who reside in or are citizens of the countries with English as the official language;

3. Candidates who graduated from the first or second cycle studies conducted in English at Polish or foreign institutions of higher education;

4. Candidates with the IB or EB diplomas.

Admission evaluation criteria

High school graduation grades/results in the following “external” (written exam) subjects: history or geography or a foreign language or the Polish language or civics (when major non-existent). If candidates passed their high school finals abroad, the grades/results may include equivalent topics, similar in scope to the Polish ones. The following principles apply in the admission process:

1. Candidates who passed the high school finals (“old Polish matriculation exam”) are awarded the results with a weight of 2 (times 2).

2. Candidates who passed the high school (“new Polish matriculation exam”) are awarded the result of the “external” (written) part of the high school finals:

• at the regular level with a weight of 1

• at an advanced level with a weight of 2 (times 2).

If a candidate passed the high school finals on both levels, a more advantageous result is applied.
